Botox is often thought of as something women do to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines. But more men are starting to enjoy the perks of botox and other aesthetic procedures. It’s no surprise, given our youth-focused world and the rise of selfies!
About 10 percent of plastic surgery procedures across the country are performed on men, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Liposuction and tummy tucks are the top two procedures. But injections such as Botox and fillers in the cheeks, jaw lines, and temples are also becoming more common. So if you’re a man (or know one) curious about botox, here’s what to know.
How it Works
Botox and other fillers are injected into the face using needles. It sounds scary, but botox works by paralyzing your facial muscles, but this relaxes them and smooths out the wrinkles. The procedure takes place in a doctor’s office or medical spa. The intake process is the same as for nearly any other treatment or procedure; you’ll fill out some paperwork before to make sure we have your full medical history and any other critical details. Injections take place in the doctor’s office. You’ll sit in a reclined chair to make it easier, and most practitioners will give you a ball or something to squeeze if you’re nervous.
Does it hurt? Most people say it doesn’t hurt, although some feel a pinch or mild pain.
How long does it last? Anywhere from four to six months. Many people go in for treatments twice per year, though some prefer to receive them four times.
How much does it cost? Botox costs $12 per unit. Most full treatments are $250-$400.
Why Men Should Get Botox
Men are often discouraged from spending time on their appearance, but wanting to look good is a human desire. If you’re not sure yet about Botox or fillers, start by taking better care of your skin, which will help prevent wrinkles. Good skin care begins with applying a daily moisturizer with SPF 15 or higher and washing your face each night. If you have more questions about skincare, talk to our reGenerations team.
