medical spa consultation

Preparing for your first visit to reGenerations Medical Spa? Here’s the lowdown: the purpose of a medical spa consultation is to customize a treatment plan. At reGenerations, we will look at your physiology, goals, expectations, budget, health, and safety. We take our time so you can relax, ask any questions you may have, and receive the advice and suggestions you need to make informed treatment decisions.

What to Expect at Your First Consultation

The staff at reGenerations will ask some questions about your current skincare regimen, exercise routines, medical history, and everyday lifestyle. Beyond what you’re currently doing, we want to hear about the results you are seeking. Here at reGenerations, your health and the health of your largest organ, your skin, is our primary concern. Our mission is to find treatments that are a good match for you, your skin, and your lifestyle. We want you to achieve optimal results and that all stems from our initial consultation.

How to Prepare For Your First Consultation

Please arrive a bit early for your appointment so you can fill out the medical intake form, which gives us a medical history. Once we begin, please tell us about your concerns, including wrinkles, fine lines, acne, age spots, and incontinence. Please also share any past treatments you have had, including fillers, Botox, chemical peels, injectables, and facial waxing. The consultation time is all about you. We’d also like to know what products you are currently using and those that you may have found either helpful or unhelpful in the past. Let us in on your fitness secrets, your diet and supplement use, and anything else you’d like to share. Remember, it’s truly all about you and how we can help you optimize your health.

Expected Cost of Your First Consultation

Nada. Zip. Yep, you read that right. At reGenerations Medical Spa, your first consultation is always complimentary. Consultations are meant to gather information, set goals, and develop the right plan for you. How could we put a price on that?

Expected Length of Your First Consultation

Consultations are essential and should not be rushed. A typical consultation will take about 30-45 minutes. You are encouraged to come with any questions you may have about your skin, desired results, and treatment procedures.

Expected Treatment Timeline After Initial Consultation

Depending on the treatment plan and treatment availability, you may be able to book your appointment immediately after the consultation. However, we like to give you time to think about your options, so we generally do not book treatments on the same day. We also want to provide our patients time to review the procedures, as well as pre and post-care instructions well before the treatment. That way if any questions come up we can answer them and allow you to decide what’s best for your body.

You can read more about those options in advance:

If you are considering a medical spa treatment, be sure you are visiting a reputable clinic. At reGenerations, we take comfort in knowing we provide professional services, as well as a wealth of information for our patients before, during, and after treatments.

3 Months Until the Wedding – Remove Surface Skin Damage

An easy and efficient way to remove years of skin damage is by getting a chemical peel.

A dull, unhealthy appearance appears because of exposure to the sun, wind, dirt, and cosmetics. A chemical peel removes dead skin cells, which allows the next layer of skin to develop and replace the old layer resulting in a tightened, smooth, and radiant skin appearance. At reGenerations Medical Spa, we offer various custom chemical peels to treat a wide range of skin issues. We can discuss personalized treatment for you, your partner, and your entire bridal party.

Untreated muscles will still work normally, it’s the lines that are minimized, not your expressions. Dysport delivers the natural-looking results people want, so much so that a whopping 97% of users say they’d do it again. Ask our professionals how you can control your look for your big day.

skin types

Winter is an excellent time to consider how you are caring for your skin; many of us get dry skin this time of year. But to properly care for your skin, you first need to understand your specific skin type. Your skin is your body’s largest organ and the decision to treat your skin with various lotions, soaps, creams, and treatments shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Determining Your Skin Type

There are a couple of ways to determine your skin type. It’s important to know if you have dry, normal, mixed, or oily skin so you can treat it correctly — otherwise you may cause more issues. For instance, if you apply a moisturizer that is too thick or heavy, your skin may react by decreasing its natural oil production, which will result in even drier skin. Conversely, if you use a cleanser that is too harsh, even if it’s recommended for excessive oiliness, it may signal to your skin that more oil is needed. It’s best to recognize which skin type you have so your efforts are not counterproductive. Learning about your skin’s specific needs will help you choose the right options and result in a balanced skin complexion.

The Bare-Face Method

Determining your skin type with the bare-faced method does not require any special equipment, just time. Wash your face thoroughly with a mild cleanser and pat it dry with a towel. Leave your skin bare, don’t apply any moisturizers or serums. Allow 30 minutes to pass and then examine your chin, cheeks, nose, and forehead for any shine. Then after another 30 minutes, check your skin for shine again. Evaluate whether your skin feels tight or parched. If so, it’s likely dry. However, if you notice a shine on your nose, cheeks, and forehead, you most likely have oily skin. If your skin falls somewhere in the middle, a little shine on your nose and forehead, then your skin falls in the middle range and is probably what we call “normal.”

The Blotting Sheet Method

The blotting sheet method is much quicker and easier than the bare-faced method, but you’ll need to source some blotting papers. Gently pat a piece of blotting paper on the different areas of your face. Examine the sheet and determine how much oil is visible. If the blotting paper has little to no oil, you probably have dry skin. If the blotting sheet is saturated with oil, you most likely have oily skin. If the blotting sheet shows some oil from your forehead and nose, your skin is probably normal or a combination of dry and oily.

You can also visit our spa to learn more about your skin type and find the right products to manage your skin.

Common Skin Issues

Once you know which type of skin you have, you will be better able to treat common skin issues. Dealing with dry, flaky skin or overly oily skin is just the beginning of your treatment plan. Let’s look at other issues that may occur and how to properly deal with them.

Severe Lines and Wrinkles

As you age, fine lines and wrinkles will appear. Of course, this is a normal part of aging. Applying sunscreen can help to halt fine lines and being mindful of relaxing your facial muscles will help as well. However, there are other options if you start to see deep wrinkles, severe frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet, and other unwanted lines.

Neurotoxins like Dysport and BOTOX are designed to improve fine lines and deep wrinkles temporarily. BOTOX is injected directly into the muscles to stop the signal from the nerve to the muscles. This ultimately results in less muscle activity. When the muscles are prevented from contracting, the tension in your face decreases, which allows the wrinkles to flatten. Dysport is used to relax the underlying muscles, which reduces wrinkles, without changing the look or movement of the rest of your face. Dysport treats moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows by reducing specific muscle activity. Results from Dysport and BOTOX are realized within a week and usually last 2-4 months. Skilled providers have extensive experience and knowledge of neurotoxins and how each one will affect facial anatomy, which means they are easily able to avoid any unwanted side effects.

Sun and Age Spots

Exposed skin, especially on the face and hands, experiences a lot of wear and tear over the years. Exposure to wind, weather, sun, dirt, and cosmetics contribute to skin damage, including sun and age spots. Repeated facial expressions, furrowed brows, big smiles, and squinting also becomes apparent. The result is a dull, unhealthy appearance in need of skin rejuvenation.

Chemical peels can help rejuvenate skin and allow it to appear years younger. A chemical peel treatment typically involves applying a solution to the surface that will remove dead skin cells, which allows the next layer of skin to develop and replace the old layer. Once the dry, damaged layer of skin is sloughed off, fresh, smooth, and radiant skin reveals itself. Based upon the level of peel and the condition of your skin, healing may vary from overnight to one week.

If you are pleased with the overall appearance of your skin but have particular sun spots or benign pigmented lesions that bother you, they can easily be removed with a special tool called the M22 aesthetic system. Treating sun spots individually is quite simple and can be achieved in one to three treatments. After the treatment, your lesions will appear darker for about a week, but then they’ll slough off and leave you with an even skin tone.

Sagging and Drooping Skin

As you get older, your skin may start to droop or sag. Your features become less defined. Or maybe you simply desire fuller lips or more defined cheekbones than the ones you were born with. Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne, two hyaluronic acid fillers, provide the perfect solution for someone looking to address common lines and wrinkles. These products have the ability to fill lines and wrinkles while keeping the overall look natural instead of overdone.

Skin Imperfections

Skin imperfections like skin tags, warts, age spots, and sun spots are common throughout a skin’s lifetime. A tool called a CryoPen is a fast, safe, and effective solution that takes anywhere from 5-25 seconds to perform, with lasting results. The CryoPen emits a fine jet of nitrous oxide under high pressure, which allows the clinician to work with incredible precision. This nitrous oxide destroys the tissue by freezing the inter-cellular fluid, forming ice shards and crystals which rupture the membrane, thereby destroying the cell. With such a precise method there is no collateral damage to healthy tissue. You shouldn’t feel embarrassed by skin imperfections as they’re completely normal, but thankfully they’re also really easy to remove.

As we age, skin issues arise, whether they’re cosmetic or caused by exposure to the elements. Luckily there is a wide variety of treatments available to help repair damaged skin, eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, and remove any unwanted imperfections. If you would like to improve your skin’s appearance, stop in to discuss treatment options with one of our skilled clinicians.

laser hair removal

Laser hair removal can significantly reduce the amount of body hair you must manage. Plus, it’s an easy way to save time and money you spend at the waxing salon. So why not get a jump start on your New Year’s Resolution and ask about laser hair removal? Here is what you need to know to get started.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a popular semi-permanent hair removal option that damages the hair follicle to minimize hair growth. Laser hair removal uses light to target the pigment in individual hairs. The light then travels down the shaft of the hair and into the hair follicle. The heat from the laser light destroys the hair follicle, so hair can no longer grow from it.

However, hair follows a unique growth cycle that includes resting, shedding, and growing periods. Recently removed hair that is in a resting phase will not be visible to the technician or laser, so you may need to wait until it regrows before removing it. That’s why laser hair removal takes a few sessions, spread out over a couple of months. But after that, you can say farewell to shaving and waxing!

Laser hair removal is defined as semi-permanent. Depending on your complexion and hair type, results will vary. In most people, some hair will regrow over time. If regrowth occurs, it will be thinner, and overall there will still be significantly less hair, resulting in a continuously smooth appearance. If you want an idea of what to expect from laser hair removal, discuss your treatment goals with us. We can guide you through the process.

What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal Sessions

During the procedure, the provider will press a hand-held laser instrument to your skin. Some lasers have a cooling device attached to the tip of the instrument and sometimes a cool gel is applied as well. When the laser is activated, the laser beam passes through your skin to the hair follicles. You might feel slight discomforts, such as a warm pinprick, followed by a cooling sensation from the gel or cooling device. Laser hair treatments are often described as more painful than shaving, but less painful than waxing.

  1. Drastically reduces hair growth so you can stop shaving.
  2. Removes hair from any area of your body including legs and arms, armpits, bikini line, stomach, face, etc.
  3. Save money.
  4. Save time; you no longer need to shave or make waxing appointments.
  5. No more shaving cuts, razor burn, or painful waxing sessions.
  6. Goodbye ingrown hairs.
  7. No more forgetting your razor on vacations or forgetting to shave before events.

  1. Unlikely to be covered by health insurance.
  2. Occasional skin irritation.
  3. Treatment areas are temporarily sensitive to sun.
  4. Jealous friends.

The total cost of laser hair removal depends on several factors. The experience and skill of the technician are of the utmost importance, and quality service providers charge more, but in turn are less likely to cause injury or unwanted side effects such as skin redness and blistering.

Other factors affecting the cost include:

  • Number of sessions
  • Number of hairs targeted
  • Size of the treatment area
  • The volume of hair growth

Begin planning for your bathing suit body now as laser hair removal does take several months to complete. Imagine a summer of no shaving? What about a lifetime? Contact us today to make your laser hair removal appointment.

Botox for men

Botox is often thought of as something women do to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines. But more men are starting to enjoy the perks of botox and other aesthetic procedures. It’s no surprise, given our youth-focused world and the rise of selfies!

About 10 percent of plastic surgery procedures across the country are performed on men, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Liposuction and tummy tucks are the top two procedures. But injections such as Botox and fillers in the cheeks, jaw lines, and temples are also becoming more common. So if you’re a man (or know one) curious about botox, here’s what to know.

How it Works

Botox and other fillers are injected into the face using needles. It sounds scary, but botox works by paralyzing your facial muscles, but this relaxes them and smooths out the wrinkles. The procedure takes place in a doctor’s office or medical spa. The intake process is the same as for nearly any other treatment or procedure; you’ll fill out some paperwork before to make sure we have your full medical history and any other critical details. Injections take place in the doctor’s office. You’ll sit in a reclined chair to make it easier, and most practitioners will give you a ball or something to squeeze if you’re nervous.

Does it hurt? Most people say it doesn’t hurt, although some feel a pinch or mild pain.

How long does it last? Anywhere from four to six months. Many people go in for treatments twice per year, though some prefer to receive them four times.

How much does it cost? Botox costs $12 per unit. Most full treatments are $250-$400.

Why Men Should Get Botox

Men are often discouraged from spending time on their appearance, but wanting to look good is a human desire. If you’re not sure yet about Botox or fillers, start by taking better care of your skin, which will help prevent wrinkles. Good skin care begins with applying a daily moisturizer with SPF 15 or higher and washing your face each night. If you have more questions about skincare, talk to our reGenerations team.

reverse sun damage

Summer is almost over, and your skin may have taken a hit from the time spent at the beach, in the yard, at the park, and at the ball game. Take care of your skin to repair the damage and reverse the effects of sun exposure. Here are some steps to take:

  • Consume beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant found in some foods, and it helps make your skin more supple and reduces sun-related wrinkles. Eat fruits and vegetables including spinach, cantaloupe, and carrots, or take a supplement.
  • Stay hydrated. Research is back and forth about whether water really helps our skin. But water certainly won’t hurt and is good for your body in many ways.
  • Ask our team about retinoids. You can find them in a prescription or over the counter in the form of retinol. These will boost the collagen in your skin, making it more elastic.
  • Remember! Protect your skin from the start by wearing sunscreen every day. The SPF should be 15 or higher. Wear sunscreen whether it’s sunny or not and regardless of temperature. When outdoors, wear a hat or seek shade under trees and umbrellas. Make sure your facial moisturizer contains SPF as well.

Need more help?

If you have skin damage from sun exposure, these approaches will help, but not truly repair your skin. Talk to our skin team about Rejuvapen, a form of microneedling that helps your skin repair damage from the sun and acne. We can also consider treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser therapy to correct sun damage. Talk to our specialists to find out which one is the best approach for your skin issues.

protect skin with sunscreen

We emerge from winter with a smile, so glad to leave dry skin behind. But warmer weather brings its own skin concerns, and not just the potential for sun damage. Here are some ways you can protect your skin this spring:

  • Apply sunscreen. We can’t say it often enough: Wear sunscreen every day. Your daily moisturizer should contain SPF 15 or higher. You can also buy sunscreens with nicer scents to apply to your arms and other areas that will see sunlight as you walk around.
  • Don’t forget those odd spots. People often skip their lips, the tops of the ears, feet, hairline and the back of the neck.
  • Avoid the sun at peak times. If you can, stay indoors between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. That might mean moving your lunchtime walk to later in the day, but you need a little pick-me-up at that time anyway, right?
  • Cleanse regularly. You might need to wash your face a little more often if you’re spending time outside and sweating under your makeup. Talk to our reGenerations team about your cleansing routine.
  • Wear sunglasses and a hat. Your eyes need protection, too, so get a pair of sunglasses that blocks UVA and UVB rays. Plus, this will cover the more delicate skin around your eyes.
  • Note any medications that affect sunlight sensitivity. Talk to your doctor about your medications. Some may make you more sensitive to sunlight and prone to burning. The usual suspects include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like aspirin or ibuprofen), some antibiotics, some oral diabetes medications, Benadryl, antidepressants, and antipsychotics.
  • Drink water. Extra water doesn’t really protect your skin, but it doesn’t hurt, either. Besides, most people don’t drink nearly enough water. Even low levels of dehydration can give you headaches, affect your mood and concentration, and make you feel more tired. The old eight glasses at eight ounces each is a good target, but you’ll need more if you’re exercising or spending more time outside.

skin cancer concerns

Many people know they should wear sunscreen every day. But do you know what symptoms may be a sign of skin cancer or melanoma? May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, so let’s take a look at how you can catch it early.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. Unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells triggers mutations, or genetic defects, that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer, and it is the most dangerous. It is mainly caused by intense exposure to the sun or tanning beds and kills more than 10,000 people in the U.S. each year. If caught early, melanoma is treatable, but if it spreads, it can be fatal. Learn about the four types of melanoma.

Watch for Melanoma

You are at a higher risk for melanoma if you have a family history and/or have more than 100 moles. Other risk factors include fair skin/hair, frequent sunburns, and a weakened immune system. Melanomas look like moles and some may develop from moles, so it’s best to check your skin regularly for odd spots. Most are black or brown, but they might be pink, blue, white, purple, or skin-colored. You may have heard of the ABCDE’s of moles and spots:

  • A = Asymmetry: If you draw a line through the mole and the two halves do not match, it is asymmetrical – a warning sign for melanoma.
  • B = Border: Normal moles have an even border. A melanoma has uneven edges.
  • C = Color: Moles should be one single color and some shade of brown. Melanomas have more than one color and can even have odd colors such as purple or blue.
  • D = Diameter: Moles should be no larger than your pencil eraser. (¼ inch or 6mm across) If your mole is larger, get it checked.
  • E = Evolving: If a mole changes over time, it may be a warning sign. If your moles and spots are changing year to year, have a dermatologist take a look.

Other Skin Cancers

Although Melanoma is the most deadly, other types of skin cancers are more common. Watch for any changes in your skin, including open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, lesions, elevated growths with a central depression, or warts; those that crust or bleed.

Protect Your Skin

You can help prevent skin cancer by taking care of your skin:

  • Stay out of the sun as much as possible between 10AM and 4PM
  • Use sunscreen with SPF-15 or higher. Put on sunscreen every two hours and after you swim or sweat.
  • Don’t get sunburned.
  • Avoid tanning beds.
  • Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
  • Check your skin regularly for changes.

beat winter acne

How to Beat Winter Acne

Acne isn’t just for the summer heat. Some get the dreaded winter acne. Many people struggle with breakouts during the winter, even when their skin feels dry. In fact, dry skin can cause acne by prompting the skin to produce more oil. That, plus the dry surface make a great places for pimple-causing bacteria to produce.

Beat those pimples back with these tips:

  • Consider what your skin needs. Depending on your skin type, you might still want a product with benzoyl peroxide. For those with drier skin, consider a moisturizer with Glycolic in it, which can help your face retain its moisture while removing dirt, oil, and bacteria.
  • Don’t be afraid to moisturize. While it feels counterintuitive, it’s still important to hydrate the skin.
  • Wear sunscreen! Sunscreen is important all year long. Be sure to use at least SPF 15 on your face, hands, and other exposed areas.
  • Skip the abrasives. While abrasive cleaners help exfoliate and wash away the grime in the summer, they can cause a lot of dryness during winter’s cold periods. Take a break from these for the season.

Still struggling with acne or other winter skin blues? Come chat with one of our providers who can create a facial skin care program specific to your needs. 919-852-3999, ext 514.
